Prima duminică din Postul Mare este dedicată biruinței Ortodoxiei, în amintirea sinodului din 843 de la Constantinopol, când a fost restaurată cinstirea icoanelor.
Se punea astfel oficial capăt unui veac și mai bine de prigonire a chipurilor sfinte pictate și a celor care le venerau, plătind adesea cu viața.
„Să nu-și faci chip cioplit” sună Porunca a 2-a, pe care s-a întemeiat sinistrul curent al iconoclasmului; ea este invocată și astăzi de neoprotestanți.
